『DDTの話』

　それは終戦直後の出来事でした。

　毎朝玄関廻りの掃除と庭に水まきをするのが私の仕事でした。屋敷廻りに流れている小川でバケツに水を汲むことから始めます。ある日水を汲むために小川に下りていくと、魚や蛙や蛇がおなかを上に向けて、水面いっぱいに白くなって浮いていました。若かったのですが、私は腰が抜けて、尻もちをついて立ち上がれません。声はしばらくしてから出てきました。母を始めとする家人が飛んで来ました。「どうしたの！」という問いに、小川を指して教えました。皆もしばらくは声が出ませんでした。

　DDTという農薬が原因だったことはしばらくして知りました。私たち日本人はそれまで自然の中で自然のままに生活してきました。「そのような生活が良かったのか、どうか。進歩して今の世の中が良くなったのか、どうか。」私には分かりません。

"Story about DDT"

　It happened just after the end of the Second World War.

　It was my daily chore to clean the porch and water the garden every morning. It starts with going bucketing water from the creek which runs around my premises. One day going down to the creek for water, I found fishes, frogs and snakes whitishly floating all over the water surface, with their belly up. Young as I was, I fell on my buttocks and was not able to stand up. For while my voice came out. My family including my mother came dashing to me. Asked what happened, I pointed at the creek. They could not also let out their astonishment for a while.

　After a while we knew its cause was the agricultural chemical called "DDT". We Japanese had lived in harmony with nature. I am not sure whether such old-fashioned life style was good or not and whether the present times became better or not.
