長兄の趣味はと言うと、まず挙げられるのは、マッチ箱に張ってあるシールをはがしてスクラップブックに張ることです：水を張った洗面器を縁側に置いて、その中にマッチ箱を浸してシールをはがすのです。ピンセットを使ってそっとシールを取り出し、天日に干してからスクラップブックに張ります。私はその作業をじっと見ているのが大好きでした。そのスクラップブックのシールはとても美しくて、一枚として同じものはありませんでした。そのスクラップブックは本棚に大切においてあり、こっそりと見たいのですが、叱られるのが怖くて一度も見たことがありませんでした。兄はタバコを吸いませんでしたので、マッチ箱は喫茶店主か友人にでも頂いたのだと思います。

　As for his hobbies, on Sundays he used to peel the seals affixed on matchboxes and put them on his scrapbooks; He dips matchboxes in a washbowl of water on the veranda, peeling the seals off them. He takes out the seals gently with the tweezers, drying them in the sun and putting them on the scrapbooks. I liked to watch his work. The seals on his scrapbooks were very beautiful and there was nothing identical. His scrapbooks were carefully put on his bookshelf. I wanted to see his seals, but I had never. Because I was afraid of being scolded for watching the seals. I think he was given matchboxes by tearooms' owners or his friends since he was not a smoker.
